Each traveler will have their individual needs and will pack according to what they believe to be important or essential. While some supplies are optional, food, water and a weapon of some type are almost indispensable. The skill set of the traveler will also play a large part in their choices of what to pack and in what quantity. Example, if a person prefers fishing to hunting, they will pack very differently.

4) Pack - made of leather and is usually worn over the shoulder.
5) First Aid Kit
1. Willow Bark - to relieve pain
2. Honey - treats wounds and cuts - used for sunburn - accelerates healing and reduces swelling and pain.
3. Cobwebs - can help stop/control bleeding
4. Moss - dries up blood
5. Live snails - healing
6. Wool or cotton bandages
Optional companion to first aid kit is the 'Herb Pouch'
1. Caraway - calms an upset stomach
2. Lovage branch - chewing on this will keep you awake
3. Mint - cures hiccups
4. Oregano - used on spider and scorpion bites
5. Parsley - gets ride of hair lice
6. Tarragon - relieve a toothache
7. Basil - will help with digestion
8. Anise - can be used to make cough drops
6) Food
1. Jerky - beef, venison, pork, poultry, elk
2. Flour or cornmeal.
3. Salt and various spices for seasoning.
4. Various fruits or vegetables depending on what is in season and available in the region. Potatoes are a standard in most packs.
7) Fire starter kit
1. Flint fire striker
2. Maple leaves placed in a birch bark container that is capable of carrying fire embers for a prolonged period of time - save time when making fires.
8) Bone needle and thread - can be used to repair clothing or close a wound.
9) Fishhooks, made from bone
10) Small whetstone for sharpening blades
11) Coil of rope
12) Goat skin water container
13) Sleeping mat / blanket
14) Cooking pot/plate - possibly also a skillet.
15) Coat or poncho - depending on climate, time of year.
Optional
1) Rabbit stick. - Throwing stick which is very effective against small game such as chipmunks. squirrels and rabbits.
2) Leather sling w/projectiles - very compact, easy to use and effective at moderate to long range.
3) Tent - treated leather - heavy and would be hot so only used in foul weather or in cold conditions.

7) Walking stick / Staff - used for balance, defense and clearing debris or underbrush.
A traveler with more resource (money) would have a horse and in rare cases a pack horse or mule to carry extra supplies. - With a horse there are additional needs which include a saddle, tack, additional water supply and feed.
